What is Renal Denervation?

Renal denervation (RDN) is a minimally invasive procedure aimed at treating resistant hypertension, a condition where high blood pressure remains high despite the use of multiple blood pressure medications. The procedure targets the nerves located in the walls of the arteries leading to the kidneys (renal arteries) which play a significant role in managing blood pressure levels.

During RDN, a catheter is introduced into the renal arteries through a small incision, typically in the groin. Radiofrequency or ultrasound energy is then applied through the catheter to disrupt the sympathetic nerves’ signals, which are responsible for raising blood pressure. By disrupting these nerve signals, RDN can effectively lower blood pressure levels in patients for whom traditional treatments have not been successful.

The procedure is particularly suited for patients with resistant hypertension, offering an alternative for those who have struggled to control their blood pressure through medications and lifestyle changes alone. It is a promising option for improving heart and kidney health and reducing the risks of cardiovascular diseases associated with uncontrolled high blood pressure.
